This 6-week program is designed for actors who have completed foundational training and are ready to advance their craft. You will explore psychological depth, physical and vocal transformation, stylistic versatility, and showcase your work in a final performance.
Course Outline
Objective: Deepen character work by exploring subtext, contradictions, and psychological realism.
Activities:
- Advanced text analysis: identifying layers of subtext and shifting objectives.
- Exploration of “given circumstances” using Stanislavski/Mamet tools.
- Partner exercises: testing character obstacles in high-stakes improvisations.
- Reflective journaling: mapping the inner life of the character.
Assessment Prep: Builds toward Scene Study.
Objective: Push beyond spontaneity into layered, nuanced improvisations.
Activities:
- Improvising with status, subtext, and hidden agendas.
- Long-form improvisations: sustaining character across extended scenes.
- “Yes, but…” exercise—complicating improvisation choices while staying in character.
- Group reflection: balancing freedom and discipline in improvisation.
Objective: Use voice and movement to transform into distinct characters.
Activities:
- Advanced vocal work: accent introduction, vocal texture, emotional resonance.
- Movement workshop: Laban effort actions, physical scoring of text.
- Applying transformation to monologues and small group scenes.
- Peer feedback on authenticity and believability.
Objective: Apply advanced acting tools in rehearsed scene work.
Activities:
- Rehearsal of 2–3-page scripted scenes (contemporary or classic).
- Exploration of dynamics: conflict, intimacy, betrayal, and reconciliation.
- Instructor coaching on beats, tactics, and emotional truth.
- Mid-course performance with feedback.
Objective: Expand versatility by working across theatrical styles.
Activities:
- Contrast exercises: Naturalism vs. heightened text (e.g., Shakespeare, Brecht, Absurdism).
- Experimentation with stylistic conventions: breaking the fourth wall, direct address, chorus work.
- Short performances in pairs or small groups.
- Discussion on adjusting performance for stage vs. screen.
Objective: Deliver polished scenes/monologues demonstrating growth.
Activities:
- Final performance before peers and invited guests (10–15 minutes per student/group).
- Video recording for self-review.
- Reflective discussion: lessons learned, ongoing challenges, and future goals.
- Written reflection/self-evaluation submitted.
