Audition and Portfolio Requirements

Bachelor of Screen and Stage (Acting)

Q. What will the structure of audition be?

Acting audition will be conducted in two rounds: first round (all applicants) and recall (selected applicants). A select number of applicants in the recall group will then be offered places in the Bachelor of Screen and Stage (Acting). The initial application process for entry into the Bachelor of Screen and Stage (Acting) will be entirely online.

You will submit:

  • One (1) video recording your personal statement, maximum 90 minutes in length.

  • Two (2) videos recording monologues, maximum three (3) minutes per piece.

  1. You will receive instructions about how to submit your pre-recorded audition and where to upload it.

  2. You may be invited to attend a call-back, and if so, you will receive an email invitation containing the details and requirements for the call-back.

  3. Due to the large number of auditionees, you will not receive any individualised feedback regarding your video submission.

  4. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Select applicants will be invited via email to participate in a face-to-face call-back.
In the call-back, applicants:

  • Will present one (1) or both the monologues presented in their video submission.

  • Engage in discussion and answer questions about the content and the characters in their monologue(s).

  • Respond to feedback and direction, and work and collaborate with others.

  • Undertake a short-written activity that mirrors the type of research and preparation undertaken by professional actors in preparation for a role.

Regional or International applicants who cannot travel to the face-to-face call-back will have the opportunity to undertake the call-back online (Teams/Zoom). Applicants will receive instructions via email about their online call-back, and will be neither advantaged, nor disadvantaged by this process.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

Your personal statement is your chance to give an insight into who you are and why you want to study at APAC. In preparing your personal statement you should consider the following questions and topics, noting that there is no right or wrong answer:

  • Tell us a little about yourself: your name, where you live, tell us about your job, or your school.
  • Why do you want to study acting? Consider the value and impact of your artform and its creative processes on audiences, industries and/or communities.
  • Who is your favourite actor or what is your favourite film and why?

MONOLOGUES

  • Choose two (2) contrasting monologues. They must be delivered in English, and each should be no more than three (3) minutes in length. Prior to your audition, memorise and rehearse your monologues for performance.
  • When deciding on your monologues, please choose from the list provided by APAC. See the acting audition information video for more detailed information about choosing, rehearsing and if appropriate video in your monologues.

Prior to an audition all auditionees need to:

  • Consider the questions listed in the audition content under Personal Statement to prepare talking points for your personal statement. Focus on what you want the panel to know and understand about you; not what you think they want to hear. Highlight your individual skills and qualities and relate these to the study of acting.
  • Prepare and memorise two (2) monologues. Choose age, experience, and culturally appropriate monologues. You need to understand and be able to discuss, where your monologue sits within the overall work so do your research by reading the entire play the monologue is drawn from.

PRE-RECORDED AUDITION

To complete a pre-recorded audition, you will need:

  • To prepare the audition content as listed above under Audition Requirements (page 2).
  • Access to video making technology (mobile phone and simple editing software is adequate).
  • A quiet place in which to record your three (3) separate videos –
    1. Video one (1): personal statement
    2. Video two (2): monologue A
    3. Video three (3): monologue B

Audition video submissions can be uploaded through WeTransfer with the email transfer being sent to admissions@apac.edu.au. Please name your upload with your Family Name, Date of Birth, the course you are applying for and the title of your video e.g. SMITH 01/01/2001 Acting – monologue A

You will receive an email invitation, to attend a call-back. You will not need to prepare any new content for the call-back as you will work with the monologues presented in your video submission. To complete a face-to-face call-back, you will need to:

  • Review the monologues you performed in your video submission for presentation to the assessment panel.
  • Attend the audition at the time and location indicated in your email invitation.
  • Be prepared to present your personal statement to the panel.
  • Be prepared to work with others and/or respond to direction and feedback.
  • Be prepared to undertake a short-written activity.

Set up your equipment checking your sound and lighting levels are satisfactory and that your camera angle and position is satisfactory.

Do not edit your videos. Your videoed monologues should run from start to finish without editing.

Each of the three (3) audition components should be presented as separate videos.

You do not need to use expensive specialist equipment to shoot your video. Your smartphone will do a more than adequate job. We need to be able to clearly see and hear you but please remember that it is your performance not the quality of your videoing and editing skills that we are interested in.

Look at the Example Acting Audition video for more information.
